All this comes much later in the film. By then, Sanjay has already been established as a misunderstood youth. Hirani’s characteristic humor has forced the audience to choose a side, but there is no depth. There is no desire to delve deep into the reasons he became a bad boy.

AR Rahman, Rohan-Rohan, and Vikram Montrose’s music sets the mood right. Songs like Kar Har Maidan Fateh and Ruby Ruby add to the experience of the film. The background score is top-notch too. The drugs infused phase of Sanju’s life is the most impressive and it has been portrayed with the right amount of sensitivity. It has some fantastic visuals and some crazy emotions too.

Why are the romantic entanglements of a self-confessed Casanova executed with such coyness? Except for Sonam Kapoor’s spirited Ruby, an early Sanju love whom he seems to truly pine for, the female characters get short shrift; Anushka Sharma’s first-reluctant-then-admiring biographer is one of the weakest links in the film.

Anushka Sharma as the writer to whom Dutt narrates his story, Jim Sarbh as the man who pushes him into drugs and Vicky Kaushal as the diehard movie fan that the hero befriends in NYC are allowed their moments in the sun. Sanju is the film that it is because of the infectious energy Ranbir Kapoor injects into the film. An absolute must-watch.

Ranbir covers a wide range of Dutt’s changing physicality — the minutest of details are captured in his shoulders, eyes, frame, voice — but it’s the internalization of Dutt and the intelligence to know what to highlight and where to hold back that lends candor borderlining on conceit such awe-inspiring authenticity.
