Sonakshi does most of the heavy lifting, but the lightness of the film undermines her efforts. The high-on-enthusiasm Jassi Gill, too, is let down by a half-baked character. Jimmy Sheirgill, for once, is unable to rise above the script. Piyush Mishra hams his way through the film.

The performances by the ensemble cast are pitch perfect, but the one actor who stands out with his comedic timing is Jimmy Sheirgill. His character has many quirks, and the actor delivers every single dialogue with disarming charm. Sonakshi Sinha as the feisty and spirited Happy is very good too. Aparshakti Khurrana, in a brief but surprising role, creates a good impact too.

The writing is determinedly juvenile, which would be fine if it were used with flair. But most of it is tired. A set piece which revolves around a guy slipping on spilled noodles, you can see coming a mile off. Characters going by the name of Makaju and FaQ. The initial snigger trails off after the nth iteration.

Sunil Patel’s cinematography is sans complaints. Aparna Raina and Sheena Saini’s production design is realistic. Divya – Nidhhi and Ipshita Bhatnagar’s costumes are authentic and appealing. Ninad Khanolkar’s editing is slick but gets a bit dragging in the second half.

It’s precarious to attempt xenophobic jokes that involve good-natured mocking of another country or your long-time rivals, but director Mudassar Aziz does a fine job of it in his latest comedy Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi.

Ali Fazal and Diana Penty, just like in the earlier film, are the weakest links. Thankfully they aren’t given much to do. Popular stand-up comedian Jeeveshu Ahluwalia’s cameo as Fa Q, another desi in China, is another unexpected delight.
