Raghava Lawrence’s direction feels like an effort to overcompensate for the lack of clarity and humor in its plot; the discomfort and need to polish up is visible and quite obvious. The music, though dropped at random intervals, is hummable.

Claiming to break stereotypes by heavily stereotyping people across the board is a device bad Bollywood never seems to get enough of: all the transgender characters clap their hands, and dance around a fire; a good Muslim character wears a ‘topi’ and beard; and everyone else speaks their lines in the hope of making us laugh.

Kanchana was made in 2011. It’s loud, simplistic and problematic in terms of representation. But Raghava created moments of cheesy fun and it was satisfying to see Kanchana ultimately get her revenge. The high pitch and stereotyping has not aged well and so much has been lost in translation. The tweaks to the original have only made this version worse – the interfaith marriage angle is laughably lame.

The gags fall flat and actors appear clueless. Nobody has anything to do except Kumar, and even he disappoints the audience. You’ll also meet some template characters like a benevolent Muslim man, a specially-abled oppressed child, and some unimaginatively outspoken kids. God, they are so annoying.
