In the guise of the crazed Vivaan, Satyajeet Dubey goes overboard in trying to articulate the disturbed state of the character’s mind. The only actor who emerges without a visible scratch from the melee is the ever-dependable Ali Fazal. Even when everyone else around him is straining at the leash, he holds his horses and chooses to ease himself into situations, no matter how charged they might be. That’s the hallmark of an actor with an impeccable sense of balance. Alas, his influence does not rub off on the film. Let Prassthanam go where it is destined to – into oblivion.

Sanjay Dutt is impressive in his role of a determined leader and a vulnerable father. But it’s Ali Fazal who makes the most of his well-written character. He exudes an easy charm as a young political leader and a responsible elder brother. Satyajeet Dubey is slightly over-the-top, but believable. Chunky Pandey appears as the only formidable opponent in the film.

Aayush (Fazal) and Vivaan (Dubey) are polar opposites; the former being the ‘good’ one; the latter being the unhinged, out-of-control one. Some of the detailing is smart and unexpected, and that keeps us going. The female characters are cardboard, though, and that’s also to be expected: this film isn’t really interested in its women as much as its men.

Fazal and Dubey provide the emotional heft as the two warring sons. Shroff and Dutt rehash characters they have assumed in the past, whereas Chunky Pandey and Zakir Hussain reduce their villainy to a spoof. Koirala is relegated to the shadows as the long-suffering widow, wife, and mother.

Aside from Fazal, the only other saving grace in this poor man’s game of thrones is Chunky Pandey as Bajwa Khatri, a swarmy businessman who would willingly sell his soul to make a quick buck. Pandey, in his limited role, is a revelation at times. Dubey as the destructive son shows potential, but even his efforts fail in his stereotypical character arch.

Be it the confused dad in a dilemma or the ruthless politician or a caring husband and friend, Dutt’s character has many shades, and the actor brings out each beautifully. He is particularly good in some of the breakdown scenes; it definitely is Dutt’s most mature performance in recent years. Watch it for him as well as the nostalgic appeal of seeing the stars of the late 80s and 90s (Koirala, Shroff, Pandey, and Dutt). You will get your money’s worth. Recommended!
